The skin is the human body’s number one organ and when stretched out, can measure up to 2 square meters. There are three types of skin layers, which are the epidermis, which is dead and waterproof, the dermis, which consists of hair and sweat glands, and the subcutis, which is the storage spot for fat and large blood vessels.

Your skin has a specific amount of elasticity and strength according to its location, with the thinnest skin found on your eyelids and the thickest found on your feet. Every 28 days, the skin renews itself and every minute your skin sheds over 30,000 dead cells. Because of this over 50% of the dust in your home is actually from dead skin.

Your skin does more than coat your body, in fact, it is home to over 1,000 species of bacteria and around 1,000,000,000,000 individual bacteria. Also, on average, there are 14 species of fungi that live between your toes.

Your skin color is predetermined by your genes and is the result of the protein, melanin. There are two types of melanin: Pheomelanin, which produces a yellow to red skin tone, and Eumelanin, which produces a dark brown to black skin tone. Albinism is a lack of melanocytes and it occurs in 1 in 110,000 people.

Acne is caused by an over production of cells lining the sweat gland and can occur even in babies in the first few weeks of life. The most common population to have acne is teenagers, in which 4/5 get some form of acne. Even in their adulthood, 1/20 women and 1/100 men suffer from acne.

To get healthy skin, it is important to eat your essentials, especially vitamin A, D, C, and E. Vitamin A helps with sun damage and cellulite, vitamin D helps with spots and growths, vitamin C works as an antioxidant, prevents sun damage, and regenerates vitamin E, and vitamin E helps with antioxidants, protects  your skin from the sun, and prevents aging.
